Infinity Ward: “Definitely Not Working On Supply Drop Or Loot Box System”

With the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare just a few weeks ahead, Infinity Ward finally breaks the silence surrounding the alleged loot boxes coming to the game. In short, the developer states in a Reddit post that they are not working on loot boxes for Modern Warfare. The question remains though: why has it taken them so long to respond and what’s up with the wording of the statement?

Infinity Ward developer Artpeasant has posted a message on Reddit stating that fans and skeptics don’t have to worry about loot boxes in Modern Warfare. The full statement reads:

Sigh. There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare. What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system. Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY. Stay tuned, we’re planning to release info this week.

It’s been over a month since players were starting to worry about loot boxes in Modern Warfare. Many sources posted a link to LegacyKillaHD’s Twitter page. The YouTuber posted a picture of what seems to be a reference to loot boxes during the Modern Warfare beta.

It’s taken Infinity Ward (or Activision, for that matter) a month to respond to the concerns of the community. Well, that’s not entirely true, as dedicated Game Enthusiast readers might have read a small statement from the same dev last week. It’s a little bit strange, however, that their previous statement seems to contradict the newest one.

The first statement suggested that the Modern Warfare microtransaction (MTX) system would be different from the one in Black Ops 4, not that it won’t have any MTX at all. That lead to some Reddit users on yesterday’s post ask Artpeasant to confirm that there won’t be any supply drops or loot boxes at all; not during launch and not after a year (as was the case with the Black Ops 4 debacle).

Another interpretation would be that there will be some form of a MTX system, but you won’t be buying loot boxes, but rather in-game items like the leaked gun charms. That would validate the part about every in-game item being unlockable through gameplay, but with MTX as a way to instantly get access to an item.

Whatever the case, we’re left to wonder why these concerns aren’t being addressed head on. Instead, seemingly contradictory information is being spread by the developers themselves, while we still have to “stay tuned” for more information to come.

We will continue to update our readers with any new information regarding loot boxes on Modern Warfare. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is scheduled to be released on October 25th, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
