Could GTA V Next Gen Launch Interfere With GTA VI Development?

The milking continues as Rockstar Games announces that GTA V also comes out on PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and S in November.

At first glance, it’s great that gamers with a next-gen console can enjoy the legendary open world game. Really though, the announcement just ensured an even longer wait for GTA 6.

GTA V for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X

Rockstar Games promises ‘new features and more’ for Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S. That obviously doesn’t mean anything at all. Let’s just say I’ll physically eat a copy of GTA V if enhanced graphics, better loading times, and new/improved visual effects aren’t included.

And developing that, takes time and effort. Time and effort that everyone would like to see put into the next Grand Theft Auto.

The wait for GTA VI just got even longer

While it’s great that GTA V is now launching on a third generation of hardware, it’s also a bit silly. We get it, the game is super profitable and still insanely fun. But shouldn’t Rockstar focus on GTA 6 by now? We’re talking about the next-gen release of an eight-year old game for crying out loud.

A while back, a former employee estimated that a Holiday 2021 release would be the best-case scenario. With GTA V for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S coming out then, that statement can be thrown out the window.

It’s unclear whether the development of a next-gen version of GTA V puts a strain on the development team. But it for sure messes with that release window. It’s now looking like it’ll be another year at least before we hear anything about GTA 6.

On the plus-side though, that does give Rockstar Games a chance to ‘practice’ developing for next-gen consoles.
