If you’re one of the tens of millions of players enjoying Call of Duty: Warzone right now, but never got into Modern Warfare (2019), we’ve got some good news for you. Activision has announced that the multiplayer of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is free-to-play throughout the weekend. Here’s how to get free access.
Modern Warfare free
Technically, the multiplayer of Modern Warfare is free for all free-to-play Warzone-players. Basically that means anyone can get in. All you have to do is download Warzone through your respective platform store (i.e. Battle.net, Microsoft Store, or PlayStation Store). Warzone does require a huge chunk of your hard disk space, so be sure to start downloading as soon as you can.
For everyone that already has Warzone installed and up to date, you can join the Modern Warfare multiplayer through the main Lobby. There you’ll see a 24/7 Playlist called ‘Stocked Up, Locked Down’. And that’s it, you just select the playlist and jump right in.
It’s kinda limited though
Don’t expect to get familiar with the entire game though, as the playlist kind of limits what you can play. First of all, there’s only two maps: Atlas Superstore (10v10) and Shoot House (6v6). The playlist only includes those two maps, with a range of game modes, including Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint. The good news is though, you can try and get your gold camos and weapon unlocks in so you have an edge in Warzone. Because despite the fantastic gameplay, it’s not necessarily fair for everyone.
You see, Warzone is a great game, but it does have one inherit problem: the tie-in with Modern Warfare. It gives owners of that game an advantage over non-paying gamers in the form of customizable Loadout Drops. If you’ve player Modern Warfare you have all your weapons unlocked and leveled up. So when you buy a Loadout Drop in Warzone, you get your decked out, perked up setup while free-to-play players have to grind for that first.
So now those players have a chance to get some of that grinding out of the way in a controlled fashion. Instead of depending on which guns you find in Warzone, you can now specifically level your guns in Modern Warfare. And have a bunch of multiplayer fun, of course.
Modern Warfare is free-to-play for everyone right now. The promotional weekend will run through to Monday the 6th of April, 10AM PT/1PM ET/7PM CET.
